Guns

I walked up to the check out counter at the local convenience store to pay for my purchase, a six pack of beer, a carton of cigarettes, some jalapeño peppers, beef jerky, a 12 gauge shotgun, two boxes of shotgun shells and two boxes of clay targets. “Eighty two dollars” the girl says, “and could I interest you in some .22 shells? They’re on special this week, 500 for a dollar?”

Obviously this didn’t happen last week, but it did happen. The numbers may be a little off because at the time it was a normal, everyday occurrence and how often do you remember these things right down to the last detail? But the point is still valid. They used to hand bullets out like Chiclets at the checkout counter, and you could buy a gun, any gun, on the spot, without even showing your ID if you looked old enough.

I write this not to offend, but if it does, tough. I write it to educate. As I have said before, you can’t miss what you don’t know. That day two friends and I went to a field, maybe two acres, and shot clay targets, drank beer and ate jalapeno peppers and beef jerky until about 2 PM. It was a fine day. We had a great time. No one was injured (maybe a little pride). No property was damaged. And no laws were broken.

It’s a great memory and the way it should be.
